Why is a client’s level of engagement and emotional responsibility important? Well, fundamentally, an engaged and emotionally responsible client will become a collaborative partner in the therapy process (rather than expecting to have therapy ‘done to them’, which, as you probably already know, isn’t how hypnotherapy works best). When working with highly engaged clients, the success of your therapy work will be dramatically increased, and you’ll be able to help your clients make permanent changes happen even faster than normal! ‘Client engagement’ basically relates to the extent that the client is an active part of the therapy process. ‘Emotional responsibility’ is how much they recognise and take ownership of their beliefs, feelings and behaviours, and whether they understand that they are in control of their own change process.
This ‘Engaging your therapy client’ training course will help you to understand where your client is currently at, and teach you how to increase both their engagement and their emotional responsibility. You’ll also learn about the impact that both high and low client engagement and emotional responsibility can have on your hypnotherapy session, together with how to assess your client’s engagement. Also, you’ll discover key influencing factors and both conversational and hypnotherapy approaches to boost a client’s engagement and emotional responsibility.
This training course, presented by Dr Kate Beaven-Marks, has been designed for anyone who wishes to develop their work with clients and generate more success in the consulting room. So, whether you are a complete novice or an experienced practitioner, whether you see clients for all kinds of problems or goals, or if you have a specific area of expertise or ‘niche’, you will be able to use the approaches within this training course to help you and your clients get the most from the therapy process. As well as that, you will certainly benefit from developing a greater understanding of how to best help your clients become more engaged and to take greater emotional responsibility within their lives. Not only will this positively enhance the therapy process, but these approaches will also have a positive influence on your client’s lives in general.
It could be that you considered this course from a self-development perspective as well, and it can certainly be applied to your own process in order to help you develop a more positive, focused and engaged mindset for yourself. This can enable you to benefit from engaging and taking more emotional responsibility in all aspects of your life, helping you to become the best version of you that you can be.
The ‘Engaging your therapy client’ training course consists of five main sections, and as well as the training video itself, you’ll also receive a detailed course manual which supports the video and provides additional material to further develop your learning. Here’s what’s included in the course in a bit more detail:
Perhaps you have already noticed that some clients participate in a therapy session more than others, and it’s often true that your therapy approach would likely benefit from working with a more engaged, empowered and emotionally responsible client. This section starts by exploring the concepts of client engagement and emotional responsibility, as well as letting you know about the impact of low and high engagement and emotional responsibility on therapy. The topics in this section include:
The engaged client
The passive client
Taking ownership of emotions
Low/high engagement impact on therapy
Low/high emotional responsibility influences on therapy
In this section you’re going to learn about one of the key influencing factors on client engagement and emotional responsibility, which is the client’s ‘Locus of Control’. We consider the characteristics of several significant positions along the ‘Locus of Control scale’ and the advantages and disadvantages of those different positions. This section includes:
Rotter’s Locus of Control
Balanced-internal Locus of Control influences
Strong-internal Locus of Control influences
External Locus of Control influences
The therapist’s Locus of Control
Locus of Control effects on self-efficacy
Locus of Control influences in healthcare
Locus of Control influences in the workplace
Locus of Control influences for gambling
Locus of Control impact for children
Also, towards the end of the manual is a range of research regarding the influences and impact of Locus of Control on a wide range of contexts and situations, together with some suggestions for further reading.
In this section you’re going to learn some of the different ways to assess client engagement and emotional responsibility. Perhaps the most common form of assessment in the everyday therapy practice environment is informal, conversational assessment. Methods for using this approach are discussed, then formal assessment is explored, both in general and for specific purposes. In the manual, you’re going to receive a general Locus of Control assessment questionnaire, together with details of a number of scales that relate to some specific conditions. By finding out a client’s location on the scale, you are better informed and then able to help them achieve a more balanced position, leading to a more engaged, empowered and emotionally responsible client. In this section, you’ll learn about:
Awareness of client’s use of language
Formal assessment scales
The general Locus of Control assessment questionnaire (example form included)
Obesity-specific Locus of Control assessment questionnaire
Mental health-specific Locus of Control assessment questionnaire
Depression-specific Locus of Control assessment questionnaire
Cancer-specific Locus of Control assessment questionnaire
This section focuses on conversational approaches that you can use to enhance client engagement and build emotional responsibility. A range of ‘alert interventions’ are covered, together with a cognitive insight generation technique. There is also a substantial segment on developing emotional responsibility using direct suggestions/affirmations and a method for clients to use these for self-care. The section concludes with a technique that can be taught to clients in order to help them develop a greater sense of control. Here are the topics in section 4:
The ‘What can I do to change?’ technique
Using affirmations for emotional responsibility
The ‘it’s my choice…’ technique
The ‘3 choices’ technique
In this section you’re going to discover how hypnotherapy can be used to help move a client towards a more balanced Locus of Control, and then maintain that position, resulting in a more engaged and emotionally responsible client. A wide range of general hypnotherapy approaches are covered, together with potential applications and adaptations. This section covers:
Re-balancing Locus of Control
General hypnotherapy approaches
Direct and indirect suggestions
Stress management and resilience building
When you buy this engaging your therapy client training course, you will receive a detailed training video together with a 37 page PDF course manual, which offers comprehensive notes about all of the client engagement information and techniques featured in the video. This means that you can watch each section of the video as often as you need, supported by the informative manual to grasp a full working appreciation of the broader and finer points of each client engagement concept and technique. To further enhance your proficiency, we recommend that you engage in self-assessment of your own Locus of Control. You may also wish to apply each technique to yourself (either in or out of hypnosis). By doing this, you will quickly develop familiarity with these therapeutic techniques, and enhance your own engagement as well as developing greater ownership of your emotions and emotional responses. As with any other skill, the more you practice using these techniques with your clients, the more adept you will become at helping to engage your clients and develop a greater sense of emotional responsibility within them.
