As you may have already come to realise, at the current time things are not as they always were. Life is different now. However, this isn’t another post about Covid and lockdown and all that stuff… This is a post about life and hypnosis businesses.
Life changes, things become different each year – that’s a fact. It is true now, and will be true every year to come for the rest of our lives, because life happens and as a species we are fantastic at quickly developing and progressing by creating new technologies to ‘make our lives easier’.
However, as hypnotists/hypnotherapists, even though we all know things are always changing. and most of us will happily change things in our personal lives, such as adapting to new technology (most of us get a new phone every couple of years with lots of different functionality to learn) and learning new ways of behaving depending on socio-economic memes and trends… why then do many hypnotists and hypnotherapists ignore the fact that life is rapidly moving forwards when they think about their hypnosis businesses, branding and marketing assets?
Go on the internet and you will find many hypnosis websites that are plagued with old and outdated branding, styling, logos and even out-of-date information about hypnosis services that are no longer relevant or even available. Not only do outdated business assets look poor, but they can also negatively impact on your bottom line as a business owner.
It’s 2021 and we have the technology to do amazing things from the comfort of our own homes and often with just a couple of clicks of a button. In the next 20 minutes, any of us could set the wheels in motion to have a new business website created (or an old one brought up to date), we could have a striking bespoke logo designed, an up-to-date payment system created, a slick testimonials system linked to our websites or a professionally edited show reel delivered to us – all through the magic of the internet. We could take all of our business assets and drag them (sometimes kicking and screaming) into the modern world, to refresh and revitalise our businesses and to make everything that we offer congruent with who we are now and how we want our business assets to reflect our current businesses.
This is nothing new, in fact, it’s what all the big companies have been doing for decades:
When running a business, you need to stay current and fit your brand to the times, regardless of whether you’re running a billion-dollar corporation, you’re the local hypnotherapist in your small town, or you’re anywhere in between. Your business assets say a lot about you and about the quality of the services that you offer.
At the current time, people are bombarded with information, and because of that a couple of things have happened. Firstly, people – on the whole – have much shorter attention spans than we used to, which means business assets that are clean, modern and easy to interact with will better help to convert people into paying customers. Secondly, people are used to the concept of ‘branding’ and will often expect business assets to be congruent with one another along the same theme (your brand).
As an example, part of my own ‘Rory Z’ branding is that I often use a picture of myself on my products and marketing materials, because I like people to know who Rory Z actually is, rather than my brand just being a ‘name’. On my original rapid hypnosis book, I had a picture of myself from 2013 on the front cover. However, over time my overall image changed, so I changed the book to remove the old (or should I say, ‘young’) picture of me from the cover, and re-branded the cover to look more like my hypnotherapy book (including a more up-to-date picture of me in the book itself and on the back cover):
More recently (this year), I’ve taken this update a step further. For the upcoming expanded 3rd edition of my rapid inductions book I decided that I’d remove all of the old pictures from inside the book (below left), and replace them with all new cartoon-style images (below right) that are more congruent with the Rory Z brand and better reflect what I look like these days!
Now, updating all the images in my book has been an absolute pain in the… well, you know. BUT, it’s been absolutely worth it, because now I have a business asset that is going to be totally congruent with my Rory Z brand, and with all the changes I’ve made (as well as re-writing the book to make sure it’s congruent with the way I perform rapid inductions nowadays), it is a much stronger product.
So, if you’ve been putting off updating your assets because it might be a bit of work, then I’ve got one piece of advice for you:
Suck it up and do it!
…and if you can’t do it, find someone who can do it for you.
Whether you ask someone you know or hire a professional, taking action is better than letting your business assets become outdated and obsolete. Learn how to do what needs doing, or outsource it to someone that’s already an expert. There are many online services out there where you can find people who can help you – often for a very affordable fee – but my favourite and the one I use most often has to be Fiverr, where you can outsource graphic design, web design, marketing media creation, you name it, you can get someone to do it for you!
So, why not make 2021 your year for bringing your business assets up to date and opening a whole new world of possibilities?
You’ll be glad you did.
