This page contains all the information you need in order to get the most out of your Hypnotic Language Cards
You can buy your own pack of Hypnotic Language Cards here:
Our hypnotic language cards are based around ‘Ericksonian language patterns’ which are words and phrases that, when used, will help you to more effectively communicate your message, without resistance. These hypnotic language patterns are very useful for gaining insight, making ‘standard’ direct hypnotic suggestions more subtle and indirect, as well as inspiring ‘deeper’ thought processes from the person you’re speaking to.
These are sometimes known as ‘Ericksonian’ language patterns because they were originally used and developed by one of the figureheads in the world of hypnosis and hypnotherapy, Dr. Milton H. Erickson. Erickson was studied as one of the models for ‘NLP’ and as a leading hypnotherapist, he had developed and honed various ways in which to communicate with and influence people at multiple levels.
Abstracts
‘Abstracts’ refer to people rather than to a specific person, meaning you ‘dissociate’ your suggestion from the person you’re talking to, whilst still indirectly giving them the suggestion.
Awareness
Using the ‘awareness’ cards can help you to gain insight about what someone is thinking or feeling, and they are a great way to soften your suggestions.
Imagination
‘Imagination’ cards bypass the critical conscious mind, because they allow you to indirectly give your suggestion, while focusing on the imaginary experience of said suggestion.
Linking
‘Linking’ cards are used to connect a desired outcome (suggestion) to something that is actually happening or likely to happen, this works well even if the link doesn’t make logical sense.
Negatives
‘Negatives’ cards allow you to give a suggestion whilst appearing to give the opposite suggestion, or telling the person that you aren’t giving them the suggestion that you are giving them.
Permissiveness
‘Permissiveness’ cards are another great way to soften your suggestions, making them more easy to accept by giving the ‘illusion of choice’.
Presuppositions
When you use ‘presuppositions’, you presume that the suggestion you are giving will automatically be accepted without challenge (or has already been accepted).
Time-based
Giving suggestions that are going to happen in the future is a great way to reduce resistance to those suggestions in the present, and this is where the ‘time-based’ cards come into their own.
There are a couple of different ways that you can use these cards to ensure that the hypnotic language patterns will begin to become almost ‘second nature’ to you. Some people will be able to simply read the cards, memorise many of them, and then begin to use the language patterns effortlessly in conversation. Other people will more effectively use one (or more) of the following approaches to embed the patterns into their unconscious every-day use. The main thing to remember is that the more you actively use the language patterns, the quicker the learning process will happen all by itself.
As you will already have read in the (very brief) leaflet included with your cards, we generally suggest that you focus your attention on using just one card per week (which means you get a card for every week of the year). This approach is great for those people who are unfamiliar with hypnotic language, and those who like to spend a little more time on one subject to really get to grips with it.
Take your chosen language card for the week and place it somewhere you will see it every day, such as in your wallet/purse, in your car, at your desk, on the fridge, etc. You could even take a picture of it and set it as the wallpaper of your phone/tablet/computer… Be creative in your placement, but ensure the card(s) are easy to see.
By repeatedly using your chosen language pattern numerous times throughout the week in day-to-day conversations, this way of speaking will begin to naturally occur in your interactions without even needing to think of it. It’s similar to when you spend time with someone who has an accent different to yours, spend enough time with that person and odds are high that you will begin to adopt some of their mannerisms and speech patterns without even realising.
For some, one language pattern a week may seem a little slow, so you may instead like to focus on using one card per day (or every couple of days, if you prefer). By speeding up the process, you are able to then work your cards “on rotation”, so in 7-8 weeks of using the rapid method (one card a day) you’ll have used every card in the pack, at which point you can go back to the start of the deck and ‘refresh your memory’ once again. When you find yourself easily working through one card each day, you can then begin to increase the number of cards per day. Give the pack a shuffle and take two or three cards each day.
If you’re not sure whether to choose the “One-a-Week” or the “Rapid” method, by all means try out both to see which one works best for you, because as you know we are all different and different styles of learning work better for some than for others.
Continue reading for additional tips on how to get the most out of your Hypnotic Language Cards, and some cool games you can play to really get the hang of using them!
You don’t need to use the cards in the order that they come in, we encourage you to give them a shuffle and mix them up, that way you will be using a different type of language pattern each time. This will keep the process ‘fresh’ which will make it easier for you to learn.
When finding a place for your daily card, aim (as much as possible) to change the location of where you keep it. This will ensure that you will always notice the card rather than allowing your mind to ‘delete’ it from your awareness (which tends to happen when things are ‘where they always are’ or where we expect them to be). Even just changing the position of the card, but leaving it in the same location can help too.
After actively using a card and moving on to the next one, aim to continue using the language patterns from the preceding card(s) that you can remember too. The aim is to have these language patterns available for use in any situation, so practice remembering as many of them as you can as you progress.
If, for whatever reason, you do not want friends, family or colleagues to see that you are using these cards, plan your placements accordingly – i.e. if you work in an office, place your daily card in your drawer, rather than propped up against your coffee mug… #CommonSense
Remember that these language patterns are supposed to be ‘indirect’, slipping under the radar of the unsuspecting person/people you interact with. If you use them too frequently or obviously, people will ‘cotton on’ to what you’re doing, and the language patterns will be rendered less effective. This is especially applicable when using one card per week…
Keep in mind that it doesn’t need to be ‘verbal’ communication that you are limited to when using the cards. We encourage you to incorporate these language patterns into your writing/text/online interactions also. By doing this, the brain is strengthening the neural pathways that will more easily allow you to remember each and every one of these language patterns for later use.
(This game is for 2+ players)
Shuffle the cards thoroughly and place face down in between the players. Choose a topic to discuss (it can be anything; hypnosis, therapy, food, music, sport, sex… whatever you like).
The aim of the game is to carry on the conversation fluently using one card each per response. You must not choose the card, but pick up at random from the shuffled deck. Aim to keep each response fairly short (under 10 seconds). If you pass / don’t respond / your response does not make sense, you’re out. The last remaining player wins.
If you mutually decide you have reached a ‘stalemate’ (or if you’d like to make the game generally more difficult), begin taking two cards at a time and using both in your response.
(This game is for 1+ players)
Similar to the game above, deal the cards equally between players, choose a topic and get your phone on ‘stopwatch’ mode. This time you do not take turns, you work through all of your cards in one go.
Start the timer and begin talking, working your way through your pile of cards, aiming to speak coherently, but with as little additional ‘filler’ as possible, about the subject in hand. The person with the shortest time wins.
(This game is for 1+ players)
Again, similar to the game before, using your shuffled cards, you are going to create and work your way through an interesting story about…anything! You can do this by yourself, or with friends (obviously, the most interesting story that ‘flows’ the best wins!)
Focusing more along the lines of conventional hypnosis, you can use your hypnotic language cards to create an actual working hypnosis script. This script can be an hypnotic induction script, a metaphor, or it can be tailored to a specific condition. Obviously the script needs to make sense, and it needs to work as a script!
Another great way to get experience using your language cards is when scrolling through social media, pick a card, and when there is something you would normally comment on, comment incorporating the card you have picked. Sometimes (when picked at random) the card that you choose will seem completely irrelevant to the subject at hand…which is good, because it means you will have to work even harder to have it make sense!
(The bonus with this activity is, if your responses don’t make sense, you will get some unbiased feedback from people wondering what the hell you’re on about!) lol.
